Mobile BayBears News Release

MOBILE, Ala. - On a chilly night at Hank Aaron Stadium, the BayBear bats went from fiery to frosty in a 3-0 loss to the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx. After belting out a season-high 18 hits in Sunday's win over Mississippi, the BayBears (5-6) could only muster three hits against the Jaxx (7-4) pitching staff, led by starter Doug Fister (2-0), who worked six innings in his third start.

Brooks Brown (1-2) didn't have any trouble either on the hill for the BayBears, but he was touched up for a run in the third inning as Luis Valbuena lined a double down the right field line. Valbuena took third after a bunt single by Michael Saunders and scored on a groundout by Mark Kiger.

The BayBears best chance to tickle the scoreboard came in the fourth as Bryan Byrne and Cesar Nicolas led off with back-to-back singles. A strikeout and a caught stealing accounted for the first two outs of the inning while Frank Curreri grounded out to end the threat.

In the eighth, the Jaxx picked up some insurance as Valbuena was at the heart of the rally with a leadoff single. After a stolen base, Saunders jumped on a Vince Bongiovanni delivery and punched it over the right-center field wall for a two-run homer. The BayBears went down quietly in the final innings as they didn't knock a base hit after the fifth inning. Craig James (S, 2) recorded the final three outs.

Tony Barnette (0-2, 11.57) hurls for the BayBears tomorrow night at "The Hank" against righty Rich Dorman (2-0, 1.64). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Call (251) 479-BEAR for tickets or log on to mobilebaybears.com.
