Mobile BayBears News Release

Zebulon, NC – The Mobile BayBears fell in their series opener against the Carolina Mudcats Monday night, 2-1, in 10 innings. BayBears' closer, Michael Nicolas, blew his second save of the season as he walked three consecutive batters in the ninth inning before giving up the game-tying hit. Carolina won the game in the bottom of the 10th with just their fourth hit of the game.

The loss wasted a great professional debut performance by BayBears starter, Roger Deago. The Panamanian left-hander threw five no-hit innings while striking out nine Mudcats, before being lifted with a 1-0 lead.

The BayBears broke up a scoreless game in the fourth inning. After John Knott reached on a fielder's choice, Jake Gautreau drove a double down the left field line, to grab the 1-0 lead.

Mobile's middle relief was equally strong as Alan Webb and Rusty Tucker pitched three shutout innings, combining for four strikeouts.

The Mudcats were down to their last out, with the bases empty, in the bottom of the ninth. Nicolas then walked his second and third consecutive hitters, before allowing a single up the middle to third baseman, Miguel Cabrera, tying the score.

Carolina won the game in the 10th off of Chris Oxspring, on a single by shortstop Josh Wilson, scoring Wilson Valdez, who had walked to lead off the frame.

The BayBears will send RHP Steve Watkins (0-1; 5.40) to the mound Tuesday to face Mudcats RHP Clint Sodowski (0-0; 1.80). First pitch from Carolina's Five-County Stadium is set for 6:15.
