HOOVER, Ala. - For the second straight night, the BayBear bats were kept quiet in a 3-0 loss to the Birmingham Barons at Regions Park. The loss sets the BayBears (14-15) back to two games out of first in the South Division.
Matt Torra (3-1) started for the BayBears and was solid through five innings as he fanned a season-high seven batters. The only mistake that Torra made was in the second when he left a breaking ball up in the zone to Jared Price, who smacked his second home run of the season to left-center field.
Cody Evans made his BayBear debut in the sixth inning but was hit hard at the beginning. Micah Schnurstein led off with a single which was followed up by Javier Castillo's single, moving Schnurstein to third. Stefan Gartrell took a 2-2 pitch down the third base line, driving home both men to put the Barons (16-13) up 3-0.
The BayBears offense had no answers for the Barons' pitching staff as Carlos Torres (3-1) allowed just two hits through six innings. Derek Rodriguez and Jon Link (S, 8) combined for the final three to hand the BayBears their third shutout of the season.
In Sunday's rubber game, Adam Howard (2-1, 5.13) will start on the bump for the BayBears against right-hander Brian Omogrosso (1-0, 1.59) at 2:05 p.m. The BayBears are back home on Saturday night, May 10, as they host the Jacksonville Suns at Hank Aaron Stadium.
