New Bedford Bay Sox News Release
The New Bedford Bay Sox opened up the 2015 campaign Thursday night at Old Mountain Field in a contest against the Ocean State Waves. New Bedford starting pitcher Howard Brey went after opposing batters relentlessly. Brey tossed a solid 6.1 innings finishing his Bay Sox debut with two strikeouts and one walk while allowing two runs on five hits on route to his first win of the season. Waves starting pitcher Tony Dibrell did not have the same success as he struggled to throw strikes early in the game. New Bedford showed their ability to capitalize on mistakes in the third inning. After back to back walks to Jake Friar and T.J Dixon, Tyler Orris would go onto knock in the first two runs of the NECBL season. Anthony Critelli would later join the hit party in the third by knocking in two runners of his own, forcing Dibrell from the game after only three innings of work.
In the top of the sixth inning, another Jake Friar walk got the action started for the Bay Sox bats. T.J Dixon would then drop down a successful bunt single. Rowdy Andrews would follow up with a bunt of his own which was thrown into left field allowing Jake Friar to score from third. Orris continued his impressive Bay Sox debut by driving in another two runs. Orris would finish the game with four RBIs on two hits, as well as two walks. The scoring would continue after a single by Aaron Huesman which would score Orris making it 8 - 0 Bay Sox after six.
The Ocean State Waves were finally able to get to Brey in the bottom of the seventh inning. After a single by Michael Corin and a long Chuckie Robinson double, Alex King would push the first run across for the Waves with a groundout to second. Nick Dawson would add another with a RBI single making the score 8 to 2 after seven. New Bedford's bullpen would go onto silencing Waves batters in the last three innings, allowing only one hit on two strikeouts. The Bay Sox were able to pick up their first win of the season with a final score of 8 to 2.
The First Citizens' Player of the Game is awarded to Tyler Orris, who finished the game 2 for 3, driving in four runs while adding two himself. He also was able to draw two walks and played solid defense at shortstop all game. Kyle Fernandes recorded his first win as Bay Sox manager. New Bedford will host their home opener Friday night at Paul Walsh Field as they take on the Plymouth Pilgrims at 6:30.
