New Bedford Bay Sox News Release
The New Bedford Bay Sox kept their playoff hopes alive Saturday night at Fitch Field beating the Mystic Schooners 9-7.
The Schooners are in the last playoff spot in the NECBL Eastern Division. After the win, New Bedford trails Mystic by two and a half games.
New Bedford had an 8-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth.
The Bay Sox bats got to work early getting four hits and two runs in the top of the first.
Lane Richards (Notre Dame) got things going with a one out single to right field. Chris Travers (Roger Williams) followed with a walk and a Chris Shaw (Boston College) RBI single brought in both runners to make it 2-0. Both Shaw and Travers advanced on throws on the play.
By the top of the third the Bay Sox had eight hits and another run to make it 3-0. With Travers on second, Shaw came through again with an RBI single up the middle.
In the top of the 5th New Bedford blew the game open with a five run inning to make it 8-0.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Richards hit a grounder to third base but the Schooners first baseman lost the ball in the sun and it got by him. Max Nogay (West Virginia University) and Carl Anderson (Bryant) scored on the error. Ryan Plourde (Fairfield) and Travers worked back-to-back walks to bring in another run, and Shaw got his fourth RBI of the night with a two run single to center field.
Shaw finished the night 3-for-4 with four RBIs, giving him the league lead with 33 RBIs on the summer.
The Mystic Schooners started their comeback attempt in the fifth.
Brandon Cipolla (Holy Cross) made it 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth when he hit a two run home run to left field. It was Cipolla's fifth homer of the year.
Mystic added another three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Nico Darras (Cal State Fullerton) made it an 8-3 game with an RBI single to left field, and Kyle Holland (Dakota State University) made it 8-5 with a two out, bases loaded bloop-single to right field.
Bay Sox reliever Jeremy Perron (Holy Cross) walked the first two batters in the bottom of the eighth. Mystic made it 8-6 on a throwing error by Bay Sox second baseman Andrew Dundon (Marshall). A Cipolla sac-fly to left field made it a one run ball game going into the ninth.
The Bay Sox added an insurance run in the top of the ninth to make it 9-7. Richards hit a two out single up the middle to score Alex Witkus (Fairfield).
