September 16, 2003 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
San Jose Stealth News Release

SAN JOSE - Having just officially appeared on the radar screen, the San Jose Stealth Professional Lacrosse team has become the Bay Area's newest professional sports franchise.

"The Stealth is covert, crafty, evasive, cunning and sly," said Silicon Valley Sports and Entertainment Executive Vice President Malcolm Bordelon. "Along with the name, we are introducing our logo and team marks - a lacrosse operative and radar insignia."

"We plan to build a team characterized by the qualities that the lacrosse 'operative' and radar represent - the lacrosse operative, a stealthy player who makes his moves fast, decisively and with great precision, great speed and great skill and the radar which represents the need for accuracy required in special ops as well as the game of lacrosse," added Bordelon.

According to Bordelon, a number of criterium were employed to select the name. It had to lend itself toward unique and creative marketing, game presentation, promotional efforts as well as exceptional merchandise opportunities.

The name was chosen after the review of more than 2,000 names submitted by lacrosse fans all over the world earlier this summer in the Bay Area Professional Lacrosse "Name the Team" sweepstakes.

The winning name suggestion was submitted by Pierce Stanley of San Jose. Stanley will receive four season tickets to all Stealth games played at HP Pavilion during the team's inaugural season. He will also receive a team-autographed jersey and will have the opportunity to conduct the ceremonial opening face-off on opening night.

The logo was designed by Terry Smith Creations (TSC) who are well renowned and respected for their creative prowess and have created the franchise identities for numerous sports organizations and programs including: the San Jose Sharks, San Jose Earthquakes, San Jose Sabercats, San Jose CyberRays and the NHL All Star games.

"On behalf of the entire Sharks organization, we are proud to welcome the sport of professional lacrosse to San Jose," said Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson. "We look forward to a successful inaugural season at HP Pavilion and hope that the Stealth will attract a Bay Area fan base as rabid about the exciting sport of lacrosse as Sharks fans are about the sport of hockey."

The NLL is North America's professional indoor lacrosse league, featuring the best lacrosse players in the world. The NLL currently has twelve teams playing in major markets throughout the United States and Canada. These teams include the: Buffalo Bandits, Calgary Roughnecks, Colorado Mammoth, Columbus Landsharks, New Jersey Storm, New York Saints, Ottawa Rebel, Philadelphia Wings, Rochester Knighthawks, Toronto Rock and Vancouver Ravens.
