Hingis Beats Venus in New Champions Tennis League

Paes, Anderson Also Playing in Indian Spinoff of WTT

After leading the Washington Kastles to their fifth WTT title, four of D.C.'s finest have taken their team tennis talents to India.

Martina Hingis, Venus Williams, Leander Paes and Kevin Anderson are participating in the inaugural season of the Champions Tennis League, which features six teams competing in 13 matches over 10 days.

The CTL format mirrors that of Mylan World TeamTennis with only a few exceptions: The Indian league features sets to six games, not five, and includes legend's singles, not women's doubles. But the most glaring change for Kastles fans will be seeing all four Washington players on different teams.

It turns out that the Battle of the Kastles isn't just taking place on social media. Hingis, Williams, Paes and Anderson went head-to-head on Nov. 17 as part of the first two matches in CTL history.

Though she lost to Martina Hingis in singles, Venus Williams won in mixed with Feliciano Lopez.

Paes prevailed over Anderson in men's and mixed doubles, securing a 6-4 win with the San Diego Aviators' Somdev Devvarman and a 6-3 victory with World No. 20 Garbie Muguruza. But the 16th-ranked Anderson had the last laugh, leading the Delhi Dreams to a 25-19 win over Paes' Punjab Marshalls by routing Devvarman 6-1 in the final set.

Meanwhile, Williams and Hingis faced off for the first time since a WTT match in 2012, when the Swiss was a member of the New York Sportimes. On that night, Williams overcame a six-game deficit and saved four match points to stun her longtime rival.

It took more than two years, but Hingis finally avenged that loss by beating the 18th-ranked Williams 6-3 and helping the Hyderabad Aces to a 27-25 win over the Bangalore Raptors. In mixed doubles, Williams and World No. 14 Feliciano Lopez defeated Hingis and Mikhail Youzhny 6-5(1).

Tennis Channel and TennisChannelEverywhere.com are broadcasting CTL matches on tape delay at 5 pm each day through the championship match premiere on Nov. 29. Be sure to set your DVRs for Nov. 23 and Nov. 24. That's when Tennis Channel is expected to air rematches featuring Paes vs. Anderson and Williams vs. Hingis.
