 Arena Football League (1987-2008)

Battle for playoff positioning highlights week 12

May 16, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release

NEW YORK - The Mitsubishi Motors Drive to ArenaBowl XXI New Orleans heats up as the Philadelphia Soul (4-6) and New Orleans VooDoo (4-6) jockey for playoff positions on Russell Athletic ESPN Arena Football Monday, May 21, at 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN2 & ESPN360.com).

New Orleans, No. 12 in this week's Schutt Sports Poll, holds a 2-0 all-time record against the Soul. With QB ANDY KELLY (2,355 YDs, 39 TDs) at the helm, the VooDoo look to secure sole possession of fourth place in the National Conference playoff standings and end the first three-game losing streak in franchise history.

This game features head coaches Mike Neu (New Orleans) and Brett Munsey (Philadelphia) who have close connections. Neu hired Munsey as his Defensive Coordinator for the now defunct Augusta Stallions in 2000, the same year Neu was named af2's Coach of the Year. The following season, Munsey accepted the head coaching job for the Tennessee Valley Vipers and earned the same award as his mentor. Both coaches accepted positions as AFL coaches the season following their af2 Coach of the Year honors.

New Orleans defeated Philadelphia, 61-47, in their most recent contest in Week 4 of the 2005 season. The game saw both VooDoo QB ANDY KELLY and Soul QB TONY GRAZIANI throw seven touchdowns each.

The Columbus Destroyers (6-4) travel to the Pepsi Center to face the Colorado Crush (7-4) on Friday, May 18, at 9 p.m. ET (FSN Rocky Mountain - Delay, 5/19, at 12 a.m. ET, FSN - Ohio, Delay, 5/19 at 12 p.m. ET, AFL NET), in a matchup that features the top-two offensive and defensive players from 2006.

Crush WR DAMIAN HARRELL (82 REC, 1,001 YDs, 31 TDs), the 2006 Offensive Player of the Year will line up against Destroyers DB JERALD BROWN (38.0 TACKLES, 12 PD, 5 INTs), the 2006 ADT Defensive Player of the Year.

During last season's Week 9 contest, Columbus, No. 7, outscored Colorado 34-7 in the first half on their way to handing the Crush its worst loss in franchise history with a 65-21 defeat. The Crush, No. 5, has tied a team-record four-game home winning streak and will set a new team mark with a win.

The Georgia Force, No. 1, make their first west coast trip of the season to face the Los Angeles Avengers (5-5) at the Staples Center on Saturday, May 19, at 10:30 p.m. ET (Sports South - Live, FSN Prime Ticket - Live, SIRIUS Radio - Channel 123).

Georgia (9-1) looks to extend its record to 4-0 against Western Conference opponents this season in a matchup that marks the return of Force WR CHRIS JACKSON (92 REC, 1,239 YDs, 32 TDs) to Los Angeles.

Jackson spent his first five AFL seasons as an Avenger where he became the first player in AFL history named both Rookie of the Year (2000) and Offensive Player of the Year (2003).

Led by QB SONNY CUMBIE (2,768 YDs, 52 TDs), Los Angeles (5-5) looks to bounce back from a 40-37 loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday.

The Central Division leading Chicago Rush (8-2) hopes to rebound from only its second loss of the season as the Nashville Kats (4-7) visit an already sold-out Allstate Arena on Saturday, May 19, at 8 p.m. ET (CSN - Chicago - Live, FSN South - Live).

Rush WR BOBBY SIPPIO (97 REC, 1,356 YDs, 41 TDs) caught seven passes for 120 yards and six touchdowns as Chicago, No. 3, outscored Nashville 31-21 in the first half en route to a 66-54 victory in their first meeting on April 7.

Sippio will square off against Kats DB AHMAD HAWKINS (44.0 TACKLES, 10 INTS) who leads the AFL in interceptions and recorded one during the team's last meeting.

This week's games also include: Arizona at Tampa Bay on Friday (Bright House - Live, SIRIUS Radio - Channel 119); Las Vegas at Utah on Friday (KJZZ - Live, AFL NET); Grand Rapids at San Jose on Saturday; Kansas City at New York on Sunday (FSN Midwest - Live, FSN New York - Live); and Orlando at Austin on Sunday (SUN - Live, FSN Southwest - Delay, 5/21, at 12 a.m. ET).

Following is Dallas' and Georgia's postseason-clinching scenario for Week 11:

The Georgia Force can clinch a National Conference playoff spot with a: Georgia win or a New York loss or a Columbus loss + Tampa Bay loss.

The Chicago Rush can clinch an American Conference playoff spot with a: Chicago win + Grand Rapids loss.
