Charleston Battery News Release
Harrisburg, PA. The Charleston Battery defeated the Harrisburg City Islanders by a score of two goals to one Wednesday night at the Skyline Stadium in front of 963. Mike Azira and Nicki Paterson provided the goals as Charleston won its third straight game.
The Battery improves to (3-1-0), 9 points and moves up into fourth position in the USL PRO tables.
The Battery opened the scoring in the 10th minute after Harrisburg conceded a free-kick just inside the Charleston half. Cody Ellison drove the ball out to Mark Wiltse on the right side. Wiltse switched it to the left side of the penalty area for Mike Azira who hit a first-time volley past Nick Noble in goal.
Charleston doubled its lead in the 38th minute after Harrisburg were called for a hand-ball in the box. Nicky Paterson took the penalty and drilled it low into the right corner.
Harrisburg pulled a goal back just before half-time through Cristian Hernandez. The ball was set back to Hernandez 20 yards out and he curled a shot past Battery goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper into the right corner of the goal.
The game opened up after the break as Harrisburg pressed for an equalizer.
Led by team captain Colin Falvey the Battery defense limited any real quality scoring chances for the City Islanders although Cooper was forced to make one good save diving at the feet of Lucky Mkosana to break up a play in the 73rd minute.
Midfielder Zach Prince narrowly missed the target with a well struck free-kick minutes later and Charleston had several other good chances to add to their lead as they continually struck at Harrisburg on the counter-attack.
Dane Kelly, Quinton Griffith and Nicki Paterson all came close to scoring a third goal but in the end the two first-half strikes proved to be enough.
The Battery concludes its two-game road trip on Friday night with a 7 PM match versus the Dayton Dutch Lions.
