Battery vs Puerto Rico Islanders

Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery takes on the expansion Puerto Rico Islanders Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium; kick off is set for 7:30 PM. This is the fourth and final meeting between the two clubs in the 2004 A-League season. The Battery has tied the Islanders twice and lost one game.

Charleston's most recent meeting with Puerto Rico was a 0-0 tie in a game played at Blackbaud Stadium on June 20. The Islanders (2-11-5, 11 points) are in eighth position in the Eastern Conference, one place above Charleston. With a win the Battery (2-8-4, 10 points) can leap-frog Puerto Rico.

Charleston enters the game on the back of a 2-0 win over the PSL Champion Wilmington Hammerheads in a third round Lamar Hunt US Open Cup game played at Blackbaud, June 30. The Battery has not won an A-League fixture since May 11.

Puerto Rico defeated the Virginia Beach Mariners by a score of two goals to none last Sunday in a game played in Puerto Rico. Forward Mauricio Salles scored both Islanders goals. Goalkeeper Michael Ueltschey was named A-League Player of the Week following his shut-out performance over the Mariners.

The Islanders are coached by Hugo Maradona, the brother of former Argentinean National Team captain, Diego. Hugo Maradona joined Puerto Rico midway through the 2004 season.

Puerto Rico's roster includes former Charleston Battery striker, Raul Diaz Arce. Diaz Arce spent the 2002 season with the Battery scoring six goals and adding four assists. The El Salvador native is fourth All-Time in points (193) with Major League Soccer and second All-Time in goals scored (82).

It's Brit Fest Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium with British food and beer specials, classic British cars and a James Bond character costume contest where you could win a pub party for 200 in the Three Lions Pub. In honor of the July 4 holiday there will be a spectacular Laser Light Show immediately following the game.
