Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery were held to a 2-2 tie by the Puerto Rico Islanders tonight at Blackbaud Stadium. Charleston led twice but on each occasion Puerto Rico fought back to level the score. Omar Daley and Gavin Glinton both tallied as Charleston climbed into second position in the USL First Division (10-7-5, 35 points).
Charleston midfielder Omar Daley scored the first goal of the game with an individual effort in the 6th minute. Daley cut past defender Alex Rivera on the left then turned inside Mauricio Segovia at the edge of the box. With two defenders stranded Daley hammered a shot past goalkeeper Dan Kennedy into the goal.
Puerto Rico fought back level in the 23rd minute after Peter Villegas flicked a header to forward Alan Marcina in the penalty-area. Marcina controlled the pass then slotted a left-footed shot past Dusty Hudock for the goal.
The Battery took the lead again in the 45th minute after forward Ben Hollingsworth passed to Glinton on the left side of the box. Glinton out-paced his defender, rounded the goalkeeper Kennedy, and then slotted into an empty net from an acute angle.
The Islanders almost scored at the stroke of half-time but Gustavo Schelloto's free-kick attempt struck the cross-bar before being cleared to safety.
In the 70th minute Daley almost scored a second after working a neat one-two with Glinton. Daley raced at goal but his right-footed shot was blocked away by Kennedy.
The tieing goal came in the 75th minute as Peter Villegas played a short pass to substitute Jonathan Lopuski twenty yards out. Lopuski curled a first-time shot over the Battery defense and into the right side of the goal.
