Charleston Battery News Release
The Charleston Battery (10-3-4, 34 points) squares off with the Charlotte Eagles (5-7-5, 20 points) Saturday night in Charlotte NC; kick off is set for 7:00 PM (950 AM / www.charlestonbattery.com). The Battery enters the game in first place in USL-2 and is certain of either a first or second place finish in the league. Charlotte is in fourth position one point behind the Pittsburgh Riverhounds; the top three teams in USL-2 advance to the post season.
Saturday's game will be broadcast live in Charleston on WJBK 950 AM with the pre-game build-up starting at 6:45 PM; the match will also be available via an audio web cast at www.charlestonbattery.com.
The Charleston Battery defeated the Harrisburg City Islanders 3-2 last Saturday night then fought the Real Maryland Monarchs to a 0-0 tie on Sunday evening in a pair of road matches. The results leave Charleston on the brink of claiming the USL-2 regular season title. The Richmond Kickers are the only team that can catch the Battery; Richmond is eight points behind Charleston, both sides have three games remaining.
Lamar Neagle, Rudolph Mayard and Tom Heinemann supplied the goals in the win over Harrisburg. Neagle's first half strike moved him into a tie for first in USL-2 goals scored (10) and points (21) with Richmond's veteran striker Matthew Delicate.
The Battery defeated Charlotte 3-2 on April 17 in Charlotte and won 2-1 in the second meeting at Blackbaud Stadium on May 1. The final game of the season between the teams is set for Saturday, August 14 in Charleston.
The Charleston Battery first played the Charlotte Eagles in both Clubs' inaugural seasons back in 1993. The teams met twice that year with the Battery winning on both occasions, 3-1 at home and 1-0 in the return fixture. Over the past 18 years the teams have met 26 times in competitive fixtures (regular season, post-season & US Open Cup) with Charleston winning eighteen games, losing five with three ties.
Charlotte has won the USL Second Division twice, in 2000 and most recently in 2005 and has made the finals on eight occasions including 2008 and 2009. Last year the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the Championship game versus the Richmond Kickers but conceded twice as Richmond came back to win.
The Eagles are led by one of the most experienced coaches in US Soccer Mark Steffens, who is currently in his 14th season as head coach for the Eagles.
