
Battery Resumes Rivalry With Silverbacks

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery welcomes the Atlanta Silverbacks to Blackbaud Stadium Saturday night; gates open at 6:00 PM - kick off is set for 7:30 PM ($8 - $15, 971-GOAL / charlestonbattery.com). The Battery (4-1-2, 14 points) enters the game in first place in the USL First Division; the Silverbacks (2-2-2, 8 points) are in 8th position.
Charleston is on a four game winning streak; the most recent was a 1-0 victory versus the Rochester Rhinos last Saturday night in a game played in Rochester. Battery forward Randi Patterson scored the lone goal, his fifth in four games. Patterson leads the league in scoring (5) and points (10).
Atlanta played twice last weekend winning 2-1 Friday night in Atlanta versus the Minnesota Thunder then losing on Sunday in Seattle 4-2. Defender Zach Kirby was red-carded in the defeat at Seattle and will be unavailable for selection Saturday night.
This is the first game of the year between Charleston and Atlanta; the teams square off twice more this season both games will be in Atlanta (8/1 & 8/16).
In 2007 the Battery and Atlanta split a four game series, the Battery won both home matches and lost twice in Atlanta; Charleston has not won a game in Atlanta since 2003.
Atlanta enjoyed a banner season last year advancing to the USL First Division Championship game for the first time in franchise history. The Silverbacks lost in the final 4-0 to the Seattle Sounders.
This will be the 41st time the two teams have met in league play and Charleston holds a slight advantage heading into the game with an all-time record of 19 wins, 16 losses and 5 ties. The first game took place in 1997; the Battery has scored 59 goals against Atlanta and conceded 47.
Halfway to Oktoberfest presented by NBSC
Saturday night is a Halfway to Oktoberfest celebration presented by NBSC with Oompah, beer and brats. There will be special Oktoberfest themed fun at half time; Charleston Oktoberfest 2008 will take place at Blackbaud Stadium on Sunday, October 19.
