Charleston Battery News Release

Charleston SC. The Charleston Battery takes on its long-time rival the Atlanta Silverbacks this Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium; gates open at 6:30 PM, kick off is set for 7:30 PM. The games is the 33rd all-time meeting between the two clubs, Charleston leads the series with 17 wins, 11 losses and 4 ties. In 2006 the Battery will play Atlanta four times, twice at Blackbaud Stadium (05/27 & 06/23 - FOX Soccer Channel) and twice at the new Atlanta Silverbacks Park in Atlanta (06/03 & 06/30).

The Battery enters the game on the back of its first loss of the season versus the Puerto Rico Islanders last Saturday night. Puerto Rico scored the lone goal of the game in the 22nd minute and despite outshooting the Islanders 21-3, Charleston could not find a way to salvage the game.

The Battery will be without the services of its two Jamaican internationals for this weekends match; midfielder Omar Daley and defender Shane Crawford have both been called in to the Jamaican Men's National Team for two upcoming international matches in the UK. Jamaica plays two FIFA World Cup hopefuls; Ghana on May 29 & England on June 3. Daley and Crawford's participation in these games will mean that both players also miss the game in Atlanta on June 3

Atlanta's last game was a 1-0 loss versus Miami FC on May 14; the game was played in Miami. Due to the construction of its new stadium Atlanta has yet to play a home game; its first home match will be next Saturday night against the Battery.

Atlanta is led by second-year head coach Jason Smith. Smith guided the Silverbacks to a record of 10-15-3 in 2005; he previously coached Piedmont College and is the current President of Gwinnett Futbol Club.

Atlanta's roster includes former Charleston Battery midfielder Josh Smith. Smith spent the last two seasons with the Battery; he played 45 games with 2 goals and 1 assist.
