Published on May 26, 2006 under USL First Division (USL-1)
Vancouver Whitecaps News Release
The Vancouver Whitecaps have a weekend filled with their I-5 rivals, the Seattle Sounders. Festivities kick off tonight when the men host last years USL First Division Champs at 7:00 p.m., Swangard Stadium. The same two teams will then battle 24 hours later at Qwest Field in Seattle.
The Whitecaps, who enter tonight's match undefeated at 3-0-2 for 11 points, sit second in the USL First Division standings and will look to set the tone early for this weeks home-and-home versus the Sounders. The league's leading scorer and Tacoma native, Joey Gjertsen, will be eager to find the back of the net after being shutout last Monday versus Rochester.
On the other side of the field the Sounders (1-2-1) will counter with their top scorer, a gangly but aggressive 6'4" rookie midfielder Cam Weaver out of Seattle University. However, Weaver and the rest of Seattle's attack will be in tough as the Caps have only given up one goal in five games.
Tonight will be the 73rd meeting between the two teams dating back to 1994. Seattle holds the advantage at 39-21-12, and are 17-14-5 at Swangard. The Whitecaps will look to snap a nine-game winless streak against Seattle. Vancouver's last win over Seattle was 1-0 on July 9 however the last five games between the clubs have all ended in ties.
The Whitecaps Women will also be traveling south this weekend as they get ready to take on the Seattle Sounds Saints on Saturday at 7:00 p.m., Starfire Sports Complex. Kara Lang and Brittany Timko will be making their season debut on Saturday. Make sure to check the match tracker at www.whitecapsfc.com for updates.
