Battery Battles Monarchs Friday Night at Blackbaud Stadium

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery battles the Real Maryland Monarchs Friday night at Blackbaud Stadium; gates open at 6 PM with kick off set for 7:30 PM ($10 - $18, 971-GOAL (4625) / www.charlestonbattery.com ). The Battery (8-3-3, 27 points) enters the game in first place in the USL-2 standings on the back of a 1-0 victory versus the second place Richmond Kickers in a game played last Friday night in Charleston; the Monarchs (3-6-5, 14 points) are in sixth place.

Friday's match versus the Real Maryland Monarchs is presented by NBSC.

Charleston Battery defender O'Brian Woodbine scored the game-winner versus Richmond last Friday, his first goal for the Club. Woodbine's evening took a turn for the worse as he received a second yellow card late in the game and was sent off. Veteran defender John Wilson was also ejected from the match after receiving a red-card in stoppage time.

The win versus the Richmond Kickers evened the season series (2-2) between the teams but more importantly it re-established Charleston's four point lead at the top of the USL Second Division.

Charleston Battery head coach should have several more options available tonight as midfielder Rudolph Mayard and defenders Mike Zaher and Yeniel Bermudez all resumed training this week following injuries.

On-loan goalkeeper Tim Melia has been recalled by Major League Soccer's Real Salt lake however Salt lake has sent goalkeeper Kyle Reynish to Charleston to cover for Melia. Melia has been in superb form for the Battery this year playing in sixteen games posting ten wins including four shut-outs. Reynish played for Charleston during the pre-season Carolina Challenge Cup tournament.

Real Maryland suffered a 3-2 away loss to the Harrisburg City Islanders in their last league match played last Saturday night. Mason Trafford and Ben Hunter scored second half goals as the Monarchs rallied from a three goal deficit but ultimately came up short.

Charleston defeated Real Maryland 1-0 back on April 27 in Maryland then the teams played to a 2-2 tie in the second meeting on May 29 in Charleston. The Battery will visit the Monarchs on July 25 for the final regular season game between the teams.
