West Virginia Miners News Release
Pitcher Michael Stout has signed a contract to play for the West Virginia Miners during the 2017 Prospect League season. Stout's signing was announced by the Miners organization on February 12 as the tenth of the many individual contract signings expected to be periodically unveiled by the Beckley, WV based team over the next several months.
Stout, who will become the second Fairmont State player (in addition to outfielder Austin Norman) on the Miners' 2017 squad also adds another West Virginian to the roster as he is a resident of St. Marys.
The 5-10, 160 lb. left-hander will be playing his sophomore season at the collegiate level this spring. He was thrown right into the mix in 2016 as a freshman and appeared in 16 games (7 starts) as a freshman for the Falcons. In 51.1 innings of work, he struck out 46 hitters versus only 22 walks while leading the team in saves with three. He posted a 4.21 earned run average with opponents hitting .267 against him.
Prior to arriving in Fairmont, his senior year at St. Marys High School saw him named as 2015 Little Kanawha Conference "Baseball Player of the Year" and being named to the West Virginia Class-A All-State Baseball first team. His junior season (2014) at the high school located alongside the Ohio River saw him being a key player in helping to lead the Blue Devils to their first West Virginia High School State Tournament berth since 1990.
The Prospect League is the premier collegiate wood bat summer baseball league in the Midwest. It has been operating in its current form since 2009 while serving the summer baseball needs of top collegiate players. The 2016 Prospect League title won by the Miners was the team's third league championship in the last five seasons.
Season-long box seats and other ticket packages for the West Virginia Miners are already on sale for the 2017 Prospect League season, which begins on May 30 while the Miners home opener will be on June 1 versus the Butler (PA) Blue Sox. Persons needing more information on the Miners can contact the team either by e-mail at mktgwvminers@frontier.com or by telephone at 304-252-7233.
