Philadelphia Barrage News Release
Newtown Square, PA (June 14, 2007) - Defending Major League Lacrosse Champions, the Philadelphia Barrage, are the only undefeated team left standing as the season enters week five play. Coming off a big win over the Boston Cannons on June 9, the Barrage are looking to continue their win streak by defeating the Long Island Lizards on Saturday, June 16.
Typically, the Barrage and Lizards play very close games, with the deciding factor being only one or two goals. In 2006, the Barrage managed to come back from an eight goal deficit early in the second quarter to defeat the Lizards by one.
Four Lizards' players will be having flashbacks of the 2004 season when they were members of the Barrage squad. Lizards' midfielders Blake Miller and Nick Russo, defenseman Nicky Polanco and attackman Keith Cromwell were all apart of the 2004 Barrage Championship team and were traded to Long Island in the 2005 off season. In exchange for those players the Barrage received goaltender, Brian "Doc" Dougherty, who was a member of the Long Island Championship team in 2003.
Dougherty is currently second in the league for the Barrage with a total save percentage of 53%. Dougherty is joined by Kyle Sweeney, Brian Spallina, Brian Kuczma and Brett Moyer on defense, which makes up one of the best defenses in the league. Combining that with one of the deadliest midfields with Matt Striebel, Roy Colsey, Justin Smith and Matt Zash, plus the strength of the attack of Ryan Boyle, Jed Prossner and Michael Springer, the Barrage may once again prove to be a difficult animal to tame.
Long Island is the first stop on Philadelphia's two week road trip. The game is set for Saturday, June 16 at Mitchel Athletic Complex. Face off is set for 1:00 PM. Their next stop will be in Rochester to face the Rattlers in a rematch of their first contest on June 23, where the Barrage defeated them 21-17. The game will be held at Paetec Park at 7:30 PM
Philadelphia returns home on June 30 for a rematch with the Long Island Lizards. Face off it set for 7:00 PM at United Sports Training Center in Downingtown, Pa. Tickets are still available by calling the Barrage ticket office at 610.355.8999.
