Philadelphia Barrage News Release

Downingtown, PA (July 6, 2007) - Meeting the San Francisco Dragons for the first time in team history, the Philadelphia Barrage handily defeated their Western Division opponents, 14-9. The victory came in front of 2,503 fans, the first ever sell-out crowd in Barrage history. The game was held at United Sports Training Center in Downingtown, Pa., a facility with a capacity of 2,500. The win keeps Philadelphia in first place in the East and protects an undefeated home record that now stands at 4-0. Attackman Seth Goldberg led the Barrage with four goals and added one assist, earning him the Bud Light Game MVP award.

The contest began as a defensive struggle as both teams came up with early stops. The first goal of the game came from Michael Springer more than five minutes into the quarter. After Goldberg put the Barrage up by two, the Dragons scored a long-range two-point goal to tie the game. Local star Todd Fairlie, who played lacrosse at Widener University and had a very large cheering section at the game, scored the Dragons' third goal of the game to put them in the lead. In the final seconds of the quarter, Andy Corno won the face-off and heaved the ball upfield where a waiting Springer scored before the buzzer to put the Barrage back in a one-point lead. In the second quarter, the Barrage started off with a goal from 2007 All-Star Ryan Boyle as he fell to the ground. However, from that point on, the Barrage offense was stifled by the Dragons' defense, as it managed only one more goal before halftime. Of the opportunities the Barrage did have, shots sailed wide or were blocked in traffic in front of the net. The Barrage defense continued its tough play on the other end, with nine first-half saves by 2007 All-Star Brian "Doc" Dougherty. However, the Dragons were able to take back a one-goal lead before halftime.

The Barrage wasted no time tying up the score at seven apiece in the third, as Boyle scored only 40 seconds into the half. Shaking off their usual third-quarter rust, the Barrage offense took back the lead. In his Barrage season debut, midfielder Kevin Cassese scored to give Philadelphia the lead. Roy Colsey followed with a man-up two-point goal. The Barrage took a three-goal lead into the fourth quarter, and the relentless attack didn't stop. San Francisco scored a goal less than one minute into the fourth quarter to bring the Dragons within two, but it was their last goal of the game. Goldberg added his third and fourth goals of the contest, and Boyle completed a hat trick to seal the win for the Barrage.

Philadelphia will go on a two-game road trip against the New Jersey Pride next Thursday and the Denver Outlaws the following Saturday. The Barrage return for a home game against the Pride on July 26 at Yurcak Field at Rutgers University.
