Philadelphia Barrage News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CONN., June 1, 2002 â The Bridgeport Barrage, Connecticut's only professional lacrosse team and a charter member of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), today announced they have made several roster moves to bolster their squad for 2002. The team drafted defensemen Nick Polanco (Hofstra '02) with the fourth overall pick in today's 2002 MLL Collegiate Draft and also acquired defenseman Mike Adams from the Rochester Rattlers in exchange for several draft picks.
Polanco, a 2002 First-Team All-American selection and Honorable Mention in 2001, was the highest-regarded defensive player in this year's collegiate class. He joins the Barrage after starting all four seasons for the Hofstra men's lacrosse team. In 2002, the 6-4, 215-pound native of Oceanside, N.Y. posted two goals, three assists and 68 ground balls in 13 games for the Pride, who finished 11-3. His brother, Armondo Polanco ('95) also played for Hofstra. Nick will most likely wear No. 41 for the Barrage.
Adams (Notre Dame '02), a native of Wilton, Conn., was one of four co-captains for the 2001 Fighting Irish squad. A three-year starter on defense, the 6-2, 193-pound defensive specialist was a second-round selection of the Rochester Rattlers in the 2002 Major League Lacrosse Supplemental Draft on March 5 of this year. Bridgeport acquired Adams and Rochester's first round pick (4th overall) from the Rattlers in exchange for the Barrage fourth round selection and the first overall pick in the collegiate draft, which they received earlier in the day (along with a 4th and 5th round selection) in a separate trade as the Barrage sent midfielder Nick Hartofilis (Duke '00) and the 7th overall pick in the draft to the Long Island Lizards.
The following are the Barrage selections from today's 2002 MLL Collegiate Draft: defenseman Nick Polanco, Hofstra (1st Round, 4th overall); midfielder Devin Ryan, Notre Dame, (4th round,19th overall); midfielder Josh Tankersley, Towson (4th round, 21st overall); midfielder Mark Morley, UMass (5th round, 25th overall); midfielder Nick Russo, Virginia (5th round, 29th overall).
The Barrage will be in action on Sunday evening, June 2 at 6 p.m. as they take on the Long Island Lizards in an MLL season-opening showdown at Hofstra Stadium on the campus of Hofstra University. The game was rescheduled after being postponed on Friday, May 31, as a result of severe thunderstorms.
