(Somerset, NJ) June 14, 2003 – The Bridgeport Barrage, Connecticut's only Major League Lacrosse Team, announced today that they were defeated by the New Jersey Pride 16-9, on Saturday night in front of 3,196 fans at Commerce Bank. Both teams came into the game winless, as the Barrage tied their consecutive loss record with four, as the Pride improved to 1-2 on the season.

The original start time of 5:30 p.m. had to be postponed due to a passing thunderstorm that soaked the field and all loyal fans that had made their way to the stadium.

The Barrage struck early when face-off specialist, Doug Shanahan, would do what he does best, by winning the opening face-off, before passing to Matt Striebel who would score for Bridgeport 23 seconds into the game.

The Pride would strike back quickly as Jon Hess would find Scott Urick for New Jersey's first goal, with 11 minutes remaining. Barrage goalie, Justin Cynar would shut down the Pride offense on many occasions, until Greg Traynor would connect with David Curry to score New Jersey's second goal of the quarter with 6:47 remaining.

Barrage's Matt Striebel would be the only player for the Barrage to score in the first quarter, as he scored for Bridgeport with just under five minutes remaining to tie the score at 2-2.

The Pride would strike first in the second quarter as Peter Jacobs would win the face-off and immediately feed to Jesse Hubbard who would score for New Jersey. The Pride would go on a 3-0 run in the second quarter before the Barrage would fight back with their own 3-0 run to end the second half as three different Barrage would score to end the half leading 6-5. MLL rookie, Michael Springer would score his first 2pt goal of his career becoming the third Barrage player to score from beyond the arc, (Colsey (12 all-time), Cromwell (2 all-time)).

The Pride would go on a 5-0 run to start the third quarter as the Barrage were unable to convert on many opportunities, when Pride goalkeeper Trevor Tierney would shut down the Barrage offensive on many attempts until Doug Shanahan was able to score his second goal of the night. The Pride would continue to outscore the Barrage as New Jersey would score the total amount of points the Barrage had tallied in the entire game, in one quarter, with the score 12-7 at the start of the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter would remain scoreless until Jon Hess would score his third goal of the night, to propel him ahead of all Pride scorers with eight points on the night (3g, 5a). The Barrage were unable to make a comeback as the last Bridgeport goal came at 8:44 left in the game as Michael Springer would take it in by himself.

The story of the game would be face-offs as both teams would score immediately after attaining possession. Coming into the game the Barrage were leading the Pride with a 59% face-offs won percentage, to the Pride's 58%. Barrage midfielder Doug Shanahan led the league coming into the game with a 68% face-offs won percentage, and would score for the Barrage straight off the draw. Peter Jacobs, the Pride's number one face-off taker would feed to Jesse Hubbard on two occasions for a New Jersey goal.

The Barrage have a long break before their next game when they travel to Long Island to take on the Lizards on June 27 at the Mitchell Athletic Complex.
