Barrage Fall to Long Island in Overtime

Bridgeport, Conn., June 28, 2002 – The Bridgeport Barrage, Connecticut's only professional lacrosse team and a charter member of Major League Lacrosse, fell to the Long Island Lizards 21-20 in overtime before 3,517 fans on Friday evening Harbor Yard. The Barrage led by as many as eight goals in the second quarter and did not trail until the last two minutes of the game.

Casey Powell (4g, 1a), the Bud Light MVP, scored the game-winning goal for the Long Island Lizards on a breakaway with just under a minute into the overtime period. With the loss, the Barrage drop to 0-4 all-time in overtime contests.

Bridgeport's B.J. Prager scored the game-tying goal for the Barrage on a feed from Brian Langtry with just 22 seconds remaining in regulation. Prager's goal completed his first career MLL hat trick. Long Island's Tim Goettelmann gave Long Island their first lead of the game at 20-19 with under two minutes to play in regulation.

Bridgeport's Dan Denihan was named the game's SOBE Iron Lizard Award winner after leading the team with three goals and a team-record four assists.

In the fourth quarter, Bridgeport used a two-point shot by Roy Colsey and a goal by Brian Langtry to pull ahead 18-14 before Long Island battled back to tie the game at 18-18 with just under eight minutes to play on an unassisted goal by Long Island's A.J. Haugen. The Barrage and the Lizards traded goals to pull even at 19-19 on shots by Bridgeport's Keith Cromwell and Long Island's Greg Traynor.

Long Island turned the tables on the scored outscoring the Barrage 9-2 in the third quarter to pull within one goal of the Barrage, 15-14. In that third quarter, Long Island matched Bridgeport's eight-goal output that they tallied the first quarter. Matt O'Kelly and A.J. Haugen each scored two goals in the third quarter.

Casey Powell scored the first goal for Long Island in the the second quarter, almost seventeen minutes into the game. Bridgeport answered on a goal by B.J. Prager on a pass from Keith Cromwell to put the Barrage up 9-1. Long Island then went on a 4-0 run on goals by A.J. Haugen, Dan Martin, Casey Powell and Ken Garcia to cut the lead to 9-5. However, the Barrage stormed back to score the last four goals of the half en route to taking a 13-5 lead into the locker room. Bridgeport began the run by scoring two goals in a span of 18 seconds on scores by Brian Langtry and Matt Panetta. Panetta's goal marked a first half hat trick. The 13 goals scored by the Barrage in the first half was also a team record.

Dan Denihan opened up the scoring just fifth seconds into the game with an unassited goal to give the Barrage a 1-0 lead. Denihan's goal was the fastest goal scored by the Barrage to open a game this season. Denihan's goal open the flood gates for the Barrage who went on to outscore the Lizards 8-0 in the first quarter. Brian Piccola and Matt Panetta paced the Barrage with two goals apiece in the opening quarter. In that opening quarter the Barrage tied an MLL record with eight goals. It was also the first time in team history that the Barrage have shutout a team in the opening quarter.

Mark Spruyt (11) and Jim Mule (6) combined to make 17 saves in goal for the Barrage. Long Island's Brian Carcaterra made 18 saves in goal for the Lizards.

With the loss, the Barrage drop to 1-5 on the season while Long Island improves to 4-1. Long Islnd has now won both meetings between the teams this season. Bridgeport will resume play on Saturday, July 6 at 7:00 p.m. when they host the New Jersey Pride.
