
Barrage Fall to Long Island, 23-19

(Nassau County, NY) June 27, 2003 â The Bridgeport Barrage, Connecticut's only Major League Lacrosse Team, announced today that they were defeated by the Long Island Lizards 23-19, on Friday evening in front of 4,336 fans at Mitchel Athletic Complex. The Barrage played their closest game of the year as the Lizards only won by four. The total combined score of the game surpassed the original MLL record of 38 points, setting a new high of 39.
The Lizards came out strong and scored their first two goals of the game within the first :30 of the game as A.J Haugen and Jay Jalbert both scored for Long Island. Attackman Dan Denihan (3g, 1a) scored his 100th career point as he assisted the Barrage's first goal of the night as Doug Shanahan put Bridgeport on the board. Denihan scored his second point of the night, with a behind the back shot to put the Barrage up 4-3 right before the first TV timeout.
The Barrage led the game at the end of the first quarter as Roy Colsey (2g (1 2pt)) scored his first two-point goal of the season, assisted by B.J. Prager (1a).
Barrage Rookie Michael Springer became the third player on the Barrage to score his second two-point goal of his career in the second quarter. The only other two player to attain this are Roy Colsey who scored his 13th of his career early in the first quarter, and Keith Cromwell who scored his second against Boston at Harbor Yard on June 12.
At the half the Lizards led 15-13, outscoring the Barrage 10-4 in the second quarter. Cromwell and Springer both had two points each for Bridgeport. Six different Lizards scored for Long Island as Bridgeport struggled to hold possession.
A brawl in front of the Barrage goal in the middle of the third quarter sent Rob Doerr to the box for two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct leaving Bridgeport a man down with the Lizards leading 16-15. A turnover by Long Island gave Roy Colsey just enough time to score for the Barrage tying the game at 16-16 at the first TV time-out of the quarter. Scoring for both teams came to a halt after the Lizards last goal with 7:11 left in the quarter, until Dan Denihan found B.J. Prager to tie the game at 17-17, with 1:22 left in he quarter. Long Island's Jay Jalbert scored his sixth goal of the night with six seconds remaining to put the Lizards up 18-17.
The Barrage tied the game at 18 all as Dan Denihan scored his fourth goal of the night. Long Island's Jalbert hoped the Barrage wall and entered the Bridgeport bench resulting in a two-minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
With three and a half minutes left in the game the Lizards led 21-19 as the officials called the last TV time out of the game. Long Island went up three as A.J. Haugen scored his third goal of the game with 3:15 remaining in the game. The Barrage were unable to come back late in the fourth quarter and allowed one last Lizard goal before being defeated 23-19.
The Barrage have a another two weeks to wait before their next game when Long Island comes to Harbor Yard on July 12.
