Barrage Fall to Cannons

(Bridgeport, Conn., August 9, 2002) – The Bridgeport Barrage, Connecticut's only professional lacrosse team and a charter member of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), fell to the Boston Cannons 17-15, before 3,289 fans on Friday evening at Harbor Yard. The loss snapped the Barrage franchise-high two-game winning streak.

Bud Light MVP David Evans led the Cannons scoring attack with six goals and two assists. In the process he set new team records for goals and points in a game. Evans also netted the game's only two point shot which gave the Cannons their largest lead of the game at 15-9.

After falling behind by six goals, Bridgeport came all the way back to pull within 17-15 with just 33 seconds remaing in the game. That last goal came from attackman Tom Kessler, the game's Sobe Iron Lizard Award winner, who scored a team-high four goals in the game. Bridgeport scored six of the last eight goals in the game before time expired.

Boston's Kevin O'Brien made 18 saves in the game including stopping Bridgeport's last second two-point shot that could have sent the game into overtime. Bridgeport's Justin Cynar also made 18 saves after playing his first full game in the cage for the Barrage.

Boston's David Evans victimized the Barrage for two goals in each of the first two quarters as Boston jumped out to a 9-7 halftime lead. Bridgeport led for most of the first quarter until Boston scored two goals in a span of 38 seconds on goals from Michael Watson and Evans to take a 4-3 first quarter edge. Bridgeport's last lead came at 3-2 after Jimmy Mormile's only goal of the game.

Dan Denihan (2g, 3a), Matt Striebel (2g) and Matt Panetta (2g) each scored two goals apiece for Bridgeport while Boston's Michael Watson (3g, 1a), Brian Silcott (2g) and Steve Dusseau (2g, 1a) provided the offensive supporting cast to Evans record-breaking night for the Cannons.

With the loss, the Barrage fall to 3-10 on the season while Boston improves to 5-7. The Bridgeport Barrage will resume play on Saturday, August 17at 7:30 p.m. at Hofstra Satdium when they travel to play their final game of the 2002 season against the Long Island Lizards.
