Philadelphia Barrage News Release

(Bridgeport, Conn. February 4, 2003) - The Bridgeport Barrage, Connecticut's only professional lacrosse team and a charter member of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), announced today that Doug Shanahan, three-time collegiate All-American (Hofstra University) and 2002 International Lacrosse Federation World Championship MVP, intends to play for the Barrage during the 2003 MLL season.

Shanahan was drafted first overall by the Barrage in the 2002 MLL Supplemental Draft but did not play last season after spending the summer with the U.S. Men's Lacrosse Team and the New York Jets training camp. The Jets signed Shanahan on May 7, 2002 as an undrafted free agent after a career at Hofstra University that included being named Division I-AA All-American at the strong safety position in 2000 and 2001. After over three months of training camp, the Jets waived Shanahan on August 31, 2002.

The return of Shanahan will be a welcome addition to the Barrage midfield line for the 2003 season. He enjoyed a successful collegiate career at Hofstra that included three All-American selections, one of which to the First-Team in 2001. Shanahan also received the first annual Tewaaraton Trophy in June 2001, presented to the nation's top collegiate lacrosse player. To these achievements Shanahan added Division I Player of the Year and USILA Midfielder of the Year honors in the 2001 season, during which he set a career-high with 43 goals, adding 13 assists for 56 total points. Shanahan recorded 95 goals and 44 assists in 63 games during his four-year collegiate career.

The Bridgeport Barrage, Connecticut's first-ever professional lacrosse team and a charter member of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), will begin their third season of play in 2003 with a six-game home schedule in Bridgeport, Conn. at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The Ballpark at Harbor Yard is located just off Exit 27 of I-95 and off Exit 1 of Route 8/25.
