Philadelphia Barrage News Release
Philadelphia, PA (March 30, 2005) â The Philadelphia Barrage of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier outdoor lacrosse league, have acquired Goalie Brian Dougherty and a 2006 second-round Collegiate Draft choice from the Long Island Lizards in exchange for Goalie Greg Cattrano. The trade features a pair of champion goaltenders as Dougherty and Cattrano led their clubs to the 2003 and 2004 MLL titles, respectively. Dougherty, a native of Philadelphia, played two seasons for the Lizards and was named Warrior Goalie of the Year in 2003. He spent the 2001 and 2002 seasons with the Rochester Rattlers.
"Doc has tremendous leadership abilities and is arguably the best goalie in professional lacrosse," Barrage Coach Tony Resch said. Dougherty has started 48 MLL games in goal over his four-year career, and has posted 26 victories. He has allowed 13.0 goals per game during his career, ranking him among the league's all-time leaders. Dougherty's finest moment came in 2003, when he stopped an MLL Championship Game-record 28 shots to lead Long Island to their second MLL title at Villanova Stadium.
Dougherty welcomes the thought making Villanova Stadium his new home turf. "I'm fired up to come back and play in Philly," Dougherty said. "I grew up in Roxborough and now live in West Chester, so it's exciting to be able to play in front of my hometown. Everywhere I've played I tell people about Philadelphia lacrosse, and now I'm right back in the mix."
"It's a win-win situation; they are the two best goalies in the world and both guys will now have the opportunity to play at home," said Lizards Head Coach Jim Mule. Cattrano is originally from Hauppauge, NY.
Dougherty's career began at Episcopal Academy, where he led the Churchmen to the 1991 Pennsylvania State Lacrosse title. "Doc" continued his career at the University of Maryland, where he became a two-time All-America selection. In 1995, he led the Terps to the Division I national championship game before they fell to Syracuse. Despite the loss, "Doc" was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament. Additionally, he was named the 1995 and 1996 NCAA Goalie of the Year. He was also a member of the 1998 United States World Lacrosse Team and played the indoor game with Baltimore and the Philadelphia Wings (NLL). Dougherty currently resides in the West Chester and is the son of Episcopal Basketball Coach Dan Dougherty.
The Philadelphia Barrage will begin their MLL title defense on May 29th against the Boston Cannons. The Barrage will host six home games, which are played at Villanova Stadium on the Main Line.
