Jacksonville Barracudas News Release

Celebration, FL - The Jacksonville Barracudas and the World Hockey Association 2 (WHA2) announced today that they will be making “Grades for Blades” part of the league curriculum this season and will be putting students to the test.

Students will be able to bring in their report cards with an “A” in any subject to receive a free ticket to any WHA2 game as a reward for their hard work and dedication.

The Alabama Slammers, Jacksonville Barracudas, Lakeland Loggerheads, Macon Trax, Miami Manatees, and Orlando Seals have all committed to helping students in their area excel by embracing the “Grades for Blades” program.

“We just want to support all the children that are so dedicated to their schoolwork,” CEO and Co-founder David Waronker said, adding that attendance will also be recognized in the program.

“The children will have the opportunity to present their perfect attendance record as well in exchange for a ticket. We want to support not just the students that make the A’s, but also the ones that try hard and still seem to fall a little short.

Waronker said that he had difficulty in school growing up. “I struggled, and I sympathize with the kids that never miss a day, but still can’t get the A’s. In that way, we want to also recognize the students that have perfect attendance and go every day no matter how difficult school may be for them.

Lakeland Loggerheads General Manager/Coach Rick Ladouceur presented the idea to the league and all member teams unanimously voted to adopt the program.

“We want to support our communities and reward students for achieving excellence in either grades or in their commitment to perfect attendance.” Ladouceur said.

The Barracudas will play a 21-week, 60 game schedule beginning on the road November 7, 2003 against the Alabama Slammers. The Barracudas home opener is November 28, 2003 vs. Miami Manatees in the brand new 16,000 seat Veterans Memorial Arena.
