Barracudas Take Three of Four on Road Trip
January 23, 2007 - SPHL (SPHL)
Jacksonville Barracudas News Release
The Jacksonville Barracudas went into last weekend facing a tough couple of road games against two of the SPHL's best teams, but came out of the weekend with a solid three points of a possible four, as they defeated the Knoxville Ice Bears and forced overtime on the Huntsville Havoc.
The Ice Bears had defeated the Barracudas in all four matchups this season, however each game has been a close, competitive game.
After a scoreless first period, Patrick Doherty got the Barracudas on the board, with a power play goal. He had help from Ryan Webb and KC Caudill on the play.
The Cudas followed the strong second period with a couple of goals less than two minutes apart early in the third period. Forwards Tyrone Garner and Ryan Webb were the goal scorers, Garner with his eighth and Webb with his twentieth.
The Ice Bears were finally able to solve Cudas goaltender, and former teammate, Ryan Person, as Patrick Carriere broke Person's shut out bid. However, the comeback was snuffed out just two minutes later, as Barracudas' forward Guy Come scored to give the Cudas a commanding 3-goal lead.
Person picked up the first star of the game, stopping 25 of 26 shots. Garner was also named a star for his offensive production, and being a physical presence throughout the game.
The Barracudas boarded the bus and headed into Huntsville, where they would face the Havoc, the SPHL's top team this season.
The game began ominously for the Cudas, as Havoc forwards Martin Kubaliak and Trevor Karasiewicz gave the home team a quick 2-0 lead.
The Cudas' top line all got into the action on their first goal of the night, as line mates Webb and Chris Bain set up Patrick Doherty for his second goal in as many nights. However, the lead was quickly restored to two goals for the Havoc, as Peter Langelia converted James Patterson's second helper of the night, to make the score 3-1 after one period.
Barracudas' Head Coach Rick Allain made the right adjustments going into the second period, as his squad scored three unanswered goals to take their first lead of the game.
Jim Murphy got it started just 4:47 in, as he beat Havoc goaltender Matt Carmichael. The Havoc then took a rash of penalties, and the Cudas took advantage, with both Jeff Angelidis and Guy Come scoring on power plays.
The Havoc evened the score quickly in the third period, as Craig Bushey caught the Cudas by surprise just 24 seconds into the frame. The two goaltenders would hold the teams at bay for the remainder of the period, forcing overtime.
Mid-way through the overtime stanza, Travis Kauffeldt was the benefactor of a fortuitous bounce, as the puck ended up behind Person. It was Kauffeldt's third point of the night, and it gave the Havoc the extra point for the win in overtime.
The weekend's three points put the Barracudas in a tie for fifth place with the Fayetteville FireAntz. The Cudas have the week off until Friday, when they face the Richmond Renegades in Richmond, VA. They then travel to Fayetteville, NC to face the FireAntz on Saturday.
