Jacksonville Barracudas News Release

The 7th place Jacksonville Barracudas made took a big step in their climb into the SPHL playoff picture Tuesday night, with a 5-4 win over the Columbus Cottonmouths.

Forward Chris Kovalcik got the scoring started just four minutes into the first period, putting a classic wrap-around past Cottonmouths' goaltender Ryan Senft. Despite plenty of shots from both teams, that was the only goal of the period.

The Cottonmouths poured on the offense in the second period, levying 21 shots at Barracudas' goaltender Justin Johnson. However, it was Cudas' forward Luke Pelham who scored first, ripping a wrist shot over Senft's shoulder, increasing the lead to two goals. Lorne Misita finally got the Cottonmouths on the board, narrowing the lead to 2-1.

Ryan Webb, the Cudas' top offensive player of late, put home a highlight-reel goal in just over a minute after Misita's mark, restoring the lead to two goals. However, two quick Cottonmouths goals from the stick of Ryan Rutz and Tim Green tied the game up at three.

Greg Lecolst put the Barracudas up 6 minutes into the third period, maneuvering his way into the slot and rifling a shot past Senft. Cudas' Captain Jason Simon score the eventual game winner just four minutes later, with John Fieweger setting him up for his third assist.

Ryan Rutz scored his second goal of the game off a scramble in front of Barracudas goaltender Johnson, but that would be all that he would let by on the night, withstanding a furious final minute.

Johnson picked up the first win of his professional career in fine fashion, stopping 42 of the 46 shots the Cottonmouths took. Player/Assistant Coach Brett Strot picked up two assists.

The Barracudas are back in action this Thursday against the Pee Dee Cyclones. Its another Throw-Em Back Thursday, as draft beer is 2-for-1 in the first period, and half-off during the second.
