Barracudas Add Veteran Defenseman, Re-Sign Baker

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Barracudas Head Coach Ron Duguay announced the signings of veteran defensemen Mike Johnson, and the re-signing of center Kory Baker.

Johnson, a 6'3", 220-lb. Halifax, Nova Scotia native, was a sixth round draft pick of the Minnesota North Stars, #130 overall in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. Johnson, an eight-year pro has played two seasons with the Canadian National Team as well as skating in the IHL, AHL, and in Europe. Last season, Johnson played 57 games with the Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League and was fourth on the team with assists (23).

"Mike is a big defenseman who carries the puck well and he's a very skilled offensive player," Duguay said. "He plays a very physical game. He's a complete defenseman which is hard to find."

Baker, a 6', 180-lb. center, played 49 games with the Barracudas last season. The Miramichi, New Brunswick native, led the team in assists (39) and was third on the team in points (50).

"Kory's very competitive and brings a lot of speed to the team. He's a playmaker who plays with a lot of heart." Duguay added.

The Barracudas will open training camp for the 2003-04 season on Monday at Skate World from 10:30am-Noon. Training Camp is free and open to the public. The Barracudas will also play one exhibition game on Saturday, November 1st against the Orlando Seals at the RDV Sportsplex in Orlando. Face off time is 4:00.
