Asheville Tourists News Release

In the first meeting of the season between the Southern Division First-Half Champion Asheville Tourists and the Northern Division First-Half Champion Greensboro Grasshoppers, the north edged out a slim victory 6-5.

The Tourists jumped in front with three runs in the bottom of the second to go up 3-0. Sam Mende drove in Tyler Massey with a single to right for the game's initial run. On the very next pitch thrown, Jordan Ribera blasted a two-run Home Run over the giant right field wall. Greensboro responded by scoring the contest's next six runs.

In the fourth, Tony Caldwell hit an infield single with runners at the corners and two outs to put the visitors on the board. The fifth inning proved kind to the Grasshoppers as they stroked two Home Runs to right-center. Austin Barnes led off the inning with his seventh Homer of the year. Later in the frame, Matt Smith took a 3-2 pitch over the scoreboard for a three-run shot.

Aaron Senne doubled in a run in the sixth and Greensboro led 6-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh. That is when the Tourists mounted their comeback attempt.

With one out and Brian Humphries at second, Will Swanner and Harold Riggins hit back-to-back doubles making it a 6-5 game. Massey followed with a line drive that appeared to be destined for left-center, but Austin Nola made a leaping catch at short and outraced Riggins to second for an inning-ending double play.

In the ninth, Humphries delivered with a two out double that put the tying run in scoring position; however, Collin Cargill struck out Swanner with a pay-off pitch to end the game.

The Tourists and the Grasshoppers are back at it tomorrow night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
