BUFFALO, NY - The Buffalo Bandits defeated the Portland LumberJax 14-4 Saturday night in front of 17,822 at the HSBC Arena. Portland (5-4) was led rookie forward Tim Campeau (1 goal, 1 assist) and forward Derek Malawsky (1 goal, 1 assist). Defenseman Brodie Merrill also tallied two assists while collecting 11 loose balls.
After a quick Buffalo (8-3) goal, Portland tied things up at one with 12:27 left in the first quarter as Campeau scored his second goal of the season off passes from Malawsky and forward Ryan Powell (2 assists). The Jax would score again with 6:50 left in the first as forward Peter Morgan scored on the fast break to give Portland its only lead of the game at 2-1.
The Bandits would close the quarter on a 2-0 run to take a 3-2 lead into the second quarter.
Portland evened the game at three with 10:25 left in the half as Malawsky scored on a long range pass from Campeau. However, the Bandits once again closed on a 2-0 run to take a 5-3 lead into the break.
The Jax cut into the Bandits lead with 9:14 left in the third quarter as forward Cory Conway (1 goal, 1 assist) sent a missile past Buffalo goalie Ken Montour to make it 5-4. The Bandits would once again close the quarter on a run, scoring the final four goals of the third to take a 9-4 lead into the fourth quarter.
Before the third quarter ended, tempers flared with 1:07 left. Merrill and Buffalo forward Brandon Francis traded blows as did defenseman David Morgan and Bandits defenseman Billy Dee Smith.
Buffalo scored five fourth quarter goals en route to the 14-4 win.
Goalie Matt Disher stopped 31 of the 42 shots he faced. Goalie Joel Weber played the final 9:10, stopping five of the eight shots he faced.
The Jax begin their first of three straight back-to-back weekends by traveling to San Jose to meet the Stealth at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28th at the HP Pavilion.
