Bandits Remain Unbeaten at Home

St. Louis Bandits News Release

Home ice remains friendly to the St. Louis Bandits as the get a 4-3 win over the Topeka Roadrunners. This improves their record to 10-2, 7-0 at home.

The St. Louis Bandits came into the two game weekend series with the Topeka Roadrunners in first place in the North Division and coming off a strong win over the Springfield Jr. Blues. Looking to extend the division points lead over the idle US National Developmental Team, the Bandits opened the scoring with a powerplay goal by Mike Merrifield. The play was set up with a give and go pass from Jake Hannon to Ben Warda. Warda then slid the puck through the slot and Merrifield buried it past the goaltender for a 1-0 lead with only 11 seconds left in the first period.

Topeka would tie it up in the second off a goal by Jake Hutt. However the Bandits, not to be outdone, would answer minutes later and take a 2-1 lead off a John Ramage slapshot from the blue line. The Bandits added what they thought would be merely insurance goals in the third period with tallies from Jake Hannon and Mike Leone. Hannon's goal was a hammer shot from the point that beat the Topeka goaltender, Bryce Merriam. Leone made it 4-1 on a backhand shot over Merriam's stacked pads after the puck had deflected across the crease.

St. Louis' lead would dwindle to one as they stopped working and admired their lead for a few shifts allowing the Roadrunners to rally late in the third period. Topeka scored a powerplay goal by Mike Hartman and then, having pulled their goaltender, scored another goal with the extra attacker by Corey Jendras. However, the night would belong to the Bandits as they killed off the last 1:14 on the clock and put another notch in the win column, their 10th of the year.

The Bandits now have 20 points on the season, are three points ahead of the US team for the division lead and will look to increase that Saturday night when they face off against the Topeka Roadrunners in game two of the weekend set.
