Jets tie up series with St. Louis

April 2, 2011 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
St. Louis Bandits News Release

The St. Louis Bandits had an opportunity to take a 2-0 series lead in the best of five North Division semi-finals. They were done in by poor second period however. The night started out similarly to the previous game with the Jets taking a 1-0 lead. The Jets gained a two on one break into the zone and Connor McBride snapped in a one timer off a Ross Mauermann pass. The Bandits would answer back.

Again, similarly to the previous game, a shot rang of the endboards and came back out front. This time, the Bandits got the good fortune. Joe Kalisz fielded the puck on the rebound, spun around and slid the puck underneat the diving Tony Kujava. Kalisz would add another on the powerplay a little over 90 seconds later. With the team on the powerplay, Brad Smith slid one across the slot and Kalisz one timed in the goal to put St. Louis up 2-1. St. Louis would hold onto that lead through the intermission.

The powerplay figured prominantly into the second period. Jordan Tredinnick slapped in a goal at 6:20 to tie it up, with the man advantage. Connor McBride then roofed a shot over Tom Comunale for the Jets second straight powerplay goal and a 3-2 lead. Less than a minute later, the Bandits had an opportunity to tie the game up with their own powerplay. The Jets got another two on one break and John Olen scored shorthanded for his second goal in as many nights. That goal would force coach Jeff Brown to pull Comunale and insert Matt Green in an attempt to turn the tide.

It seemed like the effort would be for naught as the third period went by with little fanfare. The period had the fewest combined shots of any other. St. Louis would finally break through with only 2:32 left in the period. Taylor Wolfe sent a seeing eye shot in from the point that made its way through a maze of bodies. Kujava was left no chance as he was screened until the last moment. The Bandits would make a valiant effort to tie up the contest in the waining moments, but it was not to be. Kujava and the Jets held on for the 4-3 win and a 1-1 series tie. The series now moves to Janesville for two games on April 8 and 9. If a game five is needed, it would be in St. Louis on Monday, April 11.
