Denver, CO (July 2, 2005) - Baltimore Bayhawks attackman Mikey Powell was named the Bud Light MVP of the MLL's 2005 All-Star Showdown with his four goal, three assist performance. His seven points set an MLL All-Star game record for points in an all-star game.
The game, Old School vs. Young Guns, was the first time the MLL has played an all-star game of that format- pitting players who have been in the league since the 2001 inaugural season against players who have joined the league since. 12,674 came out to INVESCO FIELD at Mile High Stadium in Denver to watch the MLL Wild West Tour Showdown.
The Old Schoolers, who were behind by as many as seven, trailed the entire game until Baltimore midfielder Josh Sims capped a 9-2 Old School scoring run that tied the game at 20 with seventeen seconds left in regulation. But with 7:50 left in the first overtime period, Baltimore native (M) Walid Hajj of the New Jersey Pride scored a solo fast break goal to give the Young Guns the win. Another Baltimore native, Philadelphia Barrage midfielder Ryan Boyle, set another All-Star game scoring record, this one for goals in a game, with 5. Bayhawks faceoff man (M) Paul Cantabene also put on a show, winning 26-44 draws, picking up 18 ground balls, and scoring one unassisted goal. Gary Gait and Josh Sims finished with two goals a piece, and Baltimore goalie Rob Scherr led all goalkeepers in saves with 13 for the Young Guns.
During half-time, the fourth annual Bud Light All-Star Skills Competition was held with the fastest shot, accuracy shot and freestyle events. New Jersey Pride midfielder Adam Doneger won the fastest shot event after beating Rochester's A.J. Shannon in a one-shot playoff. Doneger recorded a 104 mile per hour shot in the extra round. Meanwhile, Boston attackman Conor Gill took home first place in the Accuracy Shot contest after hitting all four targets in 26.1 seconds, beating out Baltimore midfielder Jeff Sonke. Boston midfieder Chris Rotelli won the Freestyle event with his first attempt when he leaped into the goal and fired home a between-the-legs shot with his back to the goal.
The Baltimore Bayhawks return home to Johnny Unitas Stadium on Sunday, July 10 to face the Long Island Lizards at 4pm.
