Bako Drops One in Extras, 3-1
April 11, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
For the second time in the season's early going, the Bakersfield Blaze took a narrow lead into the late frames, and for the second time the Visalia Rawhide dealt the Bako boys a tough result, as, on Faith and Family Sunday night at Sam Lynn, the Rawhide plated one in the 9th and two in the 10th to snatch the series finale.
Bakersfield was awfully close, to be sure.
Tyler Pike, making his season debut, worked 5.0 shutout frames with six strikeouts. Aaron Brooks followed with a pair of spotless innings, and Kyle Schepel fanned two in a scoreless 8th.
In the 9th, however, Visalia got even. In his first ever attempt at closing out a game, Ramon Morla (BS, 1) allowed a leadoff single before retiring two batters in a row. With two outs, Morla issued a walk, and a Henry Castillo single up the middle plated Domingo Leyba to knot the contest at one run apiece.
One inning later, Visalia put it away. Ronald Dominguez (L, 0-1) got the call from the pen, and after setting the first two batters down, the Rawhide hit the Blaze with a quick double-and-homer stretch that pushed the visitors in front, 3-1. Jimmie Sherfy (S, 2) pitched around a walk in a single in the bottom of the 10th to collect his second save of the series.
Bakersfield got its only run of the contest off Visalia starter Brad Keller in the 4th inning when Chantz Mack, Kyle Petty and Tyler Marlette each singled, and Gianfranco Wawoe drove in Mack on a groundout. Keller finished his night with 6.0 innings of one-run baseball, and for the second game in a row the Rawhide bullpen (Blake Perry and Austin Wright, before Sherfy) did not allow a run.
Starting Monday, the Modesto Nuts come to town for a three-game series that begins with Bakersfield Hyundai Dollar Monday, where tickets, hot dogs, beers and sodas are each just one dollar apiece! First pitch is 7:15pm.
Can't make it? Tune in to the broadcast live at BakersfieldBlaze.com and TuneIn Radio. Dan Besbris has the call, with pregame show set for 7:00pm.
