Schaumburg Flyers News Release
GARY, IN- Schaumburg Flyers ace Matt Bailie took a shutout into the seventh inning and raised his record to 8-0 on Friday, July 29 as the Flyers defeated the Gary SouthShore RailCats 7-2 at U.S. Steel Yard. Bailie pitched seven innings, going at least that far for the ninth consecutive start, and allowed just four hits as Schaumburg stayed in a first place tie with Lincoln atop the South Division's second half standings. The Flyers are now 8-6 in the second half, 24-38 for the season. Gary fell to 7-7, 34-28. The Lincoln Saltdogs beat Sioux Falls on Friday as Gary fell out of a three-way tie between the Flyers, RailCats and Saltdogs.
Schaumburg took the upper hand early, batting around in the top of the second inning and scoring four runs to seize a commanding 4-0 lead. Following a leadoff walk to Justin Hendrickson, Chris Weekly belted a two-run homer (HR #10) to right field off Gary starter Greg Bruso (2-6). Later in the inning, Geoff McCallum came to bat with the bases loaded and one away and delivered a two-run single to extend the lead to 4-0. The hit ran McCallum's hitting streak to 13 games.
An RBI single by Josue Lopez in the third inning knocked Bruso out after just 2.1 innings and ran the Flyer lead to 5-0. In the fourth, Weekly delivered again with a two-out RBI hit off reliever John Gonzalez. He was thrown out trying to stretch the hit to a double but Schaumburg led 6-0. In the sixth, McCallum led off with a double and came around to score when Marcus Nettles reached on an infield hit and a throwing error by Gary SS Jay Pecci.
Bailie, the league's ERA leader at 1.90 entering Friday's game, took a shutout deep into the game, carrying a 7-0 lead into the seventh inning before a two-out walk to Jose Yepez led to an opposite field RBI double to right by Tanner Townsend on an 0-2 pitch. Alex Taylor followed with a bloop RBI single to pull Gary to within five but Bailie retired Pecci on a flyout to end his evening. The All-Star struck out six RailCat batters and walked three. Lyle Prempas and Blake Cross (No Save) pitched one inning apiece to finish the game.
Eight of the nine Flyers had hits in the game with Weekly's 3-for-4, 3 RBI game leading the way. McCallum went 2-for-5, giving him eight multi-hit games during his current 13-game hitting streak. He scored one run on Friday, giving him at least one run scored in 11 of his last 13 games. Hendrickson and Eric Cole added two hits apiece and Nettles went 1-for-5 with a stolen base in his first game since July 16. Nettles was activated from the disabled list prior to the game after missing nearly two weeks with a hamstring injury.
The Flyers will send LHP Anthony Boughner (4-7) to the mound in a 6 PM game on Saturday. Gary will counter with lefty Jamie Bennett (6-2). Catch the road webcast at flyersbaseball.com.
