Mahoning Valley Phantoms News Release
BOARDMAN, Ohio (Sunday, March 16, 2008) - Kyle Bailey had a hat trick, Stefan Salituro collected three helpers, and Brian McGinty scored a goal and two assists to help lead the Phantoms to a 6-1 win and a weekend sweep over the Traverse City North Stars on Sunday afternoon in front of nearly 1100 fans at the Ice Zone.
A scoreless first period set the stage for a Phantoms (33-17-4, 70 points) offensive clinic in the middle frame. Just 45 seconds in, Bailey notched his first of the game to put Mahoning Valley up 1-0.
Johnny Meo and Miles Winter both picked up loose pucks in the crease and buried their opportunities, before McGinty's fifth of the season from Meo and Salituro then gave the Phantoms a 4-0 lead after two.
Traverse City (21-21-12, 54 points) came out of the gates quickly in the third. Kyle Bonis ruined Phantoms goaltender Garrett Bartus' bid for a shutout when he slid home a breakaway just 29 seconds in.
Bailey then struck again just 26 seconds later to regain the Phantoms four goal lead, and then earned the hat trick with just 37 seconds remaining in regulation, bringing the final margin to five.
Bartus stopped 27 of the 28 shots he faced on the night to up his record to 21-8-3, while holding the Stars scoreless on five powerplay opportunities.
The sweep was the second place Phantoms fifth of the season and extended their lead to seven points over the third place Alpena Ice Diggers.
Next up, the Phantoms will host Alpena on Friday and Saturday night. Game time is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. at the Ice Zone in Boardman. Catch all Phantoms hockey broadcast live on the web at www.mvpphantoms.com.
