Gateway Grizzlies News Release
Sauget, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies scored first for the first time on their home stand on Friday night, but an early advantage was washed away in rapid fashion thanks to a five-run top of the fourth inning by the Schaumburg Boomers en route to an 9-4 loss at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
The Grizzlies got back-to-back doubles to score the game's first run in the first inning, with the RBI hit coming from Zach Racusin, and with two outs in the bottom of the second inning, Andrew Penner brought in another with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
But in the fourth against J.P. Williams (2-5), Mike Hart hit a solo homer to lead off. With one out, a walk, single, and hit batter with two strikes loaded the bases, and after a popout for the second out of the inning, things snowballed as Nick Oddo plated a pair of runs with a single to make it 3-2, followed in quick succession by an Alec Craig RBI double and a Williams balk, with the Boomers holding a 5-2 lead when the dust cleared.
It did not stop there against Manuel Rodriguez out of the Grizzlies' bullpen, as Schaumburg plated two more runs in the fifth on a bases-loaded single by Clint Hardy, and another in the sixth on another homer by Hart, expanding the lead to 8-2. The Boomers added on one more run in the ninth as well against Carson Cupo to complete their scoring.
Gateway's offense, meanwhile, prolific in the early going against Shumpei Yoshikawa (4-6), fell almost completely silent after that, getting just one runner on base from the fourth through the eighth innings. They did score a pair of runs in the ninth on back-to-back RBI doubles by Trevor Achenbach and Jay Prather, but it was not enough as the Grizzlies lost the series opener.
Gateway will look to even the series behind Brendan Feldmann on Saturday, July 16, at 6:45 p.m. at GCS Credit Union Ballpark, with the Boomers' starter yet to be named.
