About the Hanson Brothers

Back in the 70's the NAHL had a club in Pennsylvania called the Johnstown Jets. Three brothers from Minnesota played for that team - Jeff, Steve and Jack Carlson. These brothers were the real-life inspiration for the Hanson brother characters and the fictitious hockey team, the Charlestown Chiefs, featured in the movie 'Slap Shot.' The 'Slap Shot'screenplay was written by Nancy Dowd, whose brother Ned was a teammate of the Carlson's and had shared many stories with her about the antics of the team on and off the ice. Finding actors who could skate well enough to portray professional hockey players proved to be difficult and at the suggestion of Ned, the director gave the Carlson brothers and teammate Dave Hanson a chance to audition. All four men were cast in the movie, but Jack Carlson was unable to act in the film because he was called up to play for the Edmonton Oilers in the WHA playoffs. Dave Hanson took his place, and has since been known as the third brother. Paul Newman and Michael Ontkean also starred in the movie.
