Austin Aztex News Release

AUSTIN, Texas (www.austinaztex.com) - For the second consecutive year, the Austin Aztex took home the Austin Chamber of Commerce Community Relations Award on Wednesday night at the Chamber's Awards Banquet at the Hilton Austin.

Austin's players and staff have appeared throughout the community more than 100 times throughout the 2010 calendar year to date and still have a plethora of events lined up to through the remainder of the season. The appearances have included partnering with 18 Austin (AISD) middle schools to improve cardiovascular fitness, providing training and fundraising opportunities for youth clubs, numerous volunteer and guest appearances to support local charities, visits to both elementary and middle school career fairs and involvement in Partners in Education classroom coaching.

"Winning this award last year was fantastic achievement. To win it two years in a row is unbelievable!" Aztex President and Owner Phil Rawlins said. "Recognition like this from our business peers make us all very proud. I would like to thank the staff and players for all the hard work and extra hours they have put in to winning this prestigious award for the second year in succession."

In addition to the player appearances, the Aztex have donated more than $120,000 in the form of free tickets, jerseys, t-shirts, soccer balls and free weeks of Aztex Soccer Camps.

At each of the Aztex 15 home games a year, the club partners with the areas non-profit organizations to raise awareness for their cause by featuring the group on game programs, free booth space, public address announcements, recognition on the Aztex Web site and free tickets to reward their volunteers and staff.

On April 28, the Aztex hosted the Haitian National Soccer team at House Park to kickoff their partnership with Virgo Sports to collect new and gently used soccer equipment for redistribution to underprivileged youth soccer teams, both in the Austin area and abroad. Admission to the match was free, but fans were encouraged to donate money and their used soccer gear. An amazing total of $11,750 was raised and a staggering amount of soccer balls, cleats, jerseys and even goals were donated and are on their way to the children of Haiti.

The Aztex have also helped Austin Police Department -- in particular the Joint Juvenile Gang Intervention Unit. They teach a gang prevention curriculum in several elementary schools. The Aztex provided prizes for winners of essay competitions about being a good citizen.

"As an organization we are committed to giving back to the community of Greater Austin and being positive role models for kids," Rawlins said.

Austin's next match is on Saturday against NSC Minnesota at 7:30 p.m. at House Park. A win by the Aztex would put the club back into first place, where it has sat for much of the season with only six games remaining on the schedule.
