Aztex Square off Against Miami FC for Second Time This Season
June 18, 2010 - U.S. Soccer Federation D-2 (USSF D-2)
Austin Aztex News Release
After having their eight match unbeaten streak snapped last week, the Austin Aztex will be looking to start a new streak with a win against the FC Miami Blues this at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at House Park.
The match will be the second meeting of the two teams this season, with the previous occurring in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. In that last meeting, the Aztex (7-2-3) prevailed, 3-1, with all three goals coming in the first half.
This match will be the fourth and final match of a four-game home stand the Aztex have enjoyed through the month of June.
Peri Marosevic, the most recent pick up for the Aztex, is expected to make his debut for the team.
Marosevic should aid the Aztex in their attempt to extend their league lead, which currently sits at five points.
Aztex center back Kieron Bernard is also expected to make an appearance for the team after a long absence due to a lingering hamstring injury. Bernard's return will help provide depth to the Aztex backline.
Miami (2-2-7) has recently ascended into the top of the NASL conference table with an unbeaten streak of their own. The Blues are 1-0-2 in their last three matches with their most recent match resulting in a 1-0 victory against the Portland Timbers.
The dual threat of Christian Gomez and Paulo Araujo Jr. provide Miami with a difficult attack to defend against. Each player has scored four goals for Miami this season.
In fact, Araujo Jr. is the lone Miami player to score against the Aztex this season.
Offense wasn't a huge problem for the Blues in their last meeting against the Aztex as they were able to match the amount of shots taken by the Aztex (11) and had an advantage in the amount of corner kicks taken (8-2).
However, it was too little too late for the Blues as the Aztex started off with a bang and put away a couple of goals early.
Austin hopes to start this Saturday's match the same way they started the previous match against the Blues, by scoring a couple early goals en route to securing a victory.
This Saturday the Aztex will be celebrating father's day by selecting a few lucky fans as winners for a BritGolf gift certificate, a Cuatros gift certificate and a free chiropractic session with Dr. VanDeWalle.
*Game Notes: *
*Series: *Austin leads the all-time series against Miami FC 2-1, with the latest match resulting in a 3-1 victory for the Aztex. In addition to today's match, the Aztex and Blues will be squaring off again in Miami next Saturday and at House Park on July 31. Miami is the only team Austin plays four times this season.
*Red Hot June:* Austin has scored 12 goals in the month of June in its short two- year history. The only month where the Aztex have scored more goals in is the month of May, where the Aztex have scored 18 goals. In the Aztex inaugural pro season, the month of June served as the highest scoring month for the team (9).
*Speaking of Goal Scoring**:* Miami and Austin are two of the top three highest scoring teams in the USSF D-2 Pro League. Austin leads the league with 22 goals, while Miami is third with 13.
*Putting in Their Time**:* Five of the top eight minutes leaders in the league come from the Aztex. Yordany Alvarez, Jay Needham, Leonard Griffin and Miguel Gallardo have yet to come out of a league game (1080 minutes). Falling just behind the group is Jamie Watson with 1034 minutes.
*Tying the Knot:* All five of Miami's season-opening matches resulted in draws. The Blues now have seven draws on the year --three more than the next closest teams (Portland, Vancouver, Carolina).
*On the Road Again: * The Aztex have been comfortably at home for the better part of June. Austin will hit the road for the first time all month when they take on Miami FC on June 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Lockhart Stadium.
*Injury Update: *Lance Watson (hamstring) is questionable for Saturday's match up with Miami FC.
*What's Next? * After the Aztex league match with Miami FC, the team will take on the Arizona Sahuaros in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup June 22 at 7:30 p.m. at House Park. Following that match the Aztex will hit the road to take on Miami FC June 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Lockhart Stadium.
