Aztex Look To Extend League Lead

May 27, 2010 - U.S. Soccer Federation D-2 (USSF D-2)
Austin Aztex News Release

Fresh off of their second multiple goal victory of the season, the Austin Aztex travel to UMBC Stadium to take on Crystal Palace Baltimore on Saturday at 6 p.m. (CST).

Austin is looking to increase their hold on the league by beating Baltimore for the second time this season.

The first matchup ended in a 2-1 result in favor of the Aztex with Lance Watson and Jamie Watson each scoring goals for the Aztex.

Scoring certainly has not been a problem for the Aztex lately as they have been able to put away at least three goals in their last two matches.

Eddie Johnson is a big reason why the Aztex attack has been red hot as of late. With a goal in Wednesday night's matchup with Miami FC, Johnson's point total increased 13 this season, which puts Johnson only three points behind the league leader Ryan Pore of the Portland Timbers.

Crystal Palace Baltimore has only won two games in the month of May and both have come against the Portland Timbers. However this match presents an exciting opportunity and perhaps some inspiration for Baltimore.

An interesting twist has been provided for this match. Baltimore is sponsoring a "Live Pink Night at the Palace" event where the players for Baltimore will be wearing pink kits in support of breast cancer awareness and prevention.

If this match slightly resembles these two team's previous matchup then fans in Baltimore could be in for quite a game.

Saturday's 6 p.m. match up can be seen live on www.austinaztex.com.

Game Notes:

Series Matchup Baltimore is in its first year in the league, therefore the all-time series lead goes 1-0 in favor of the Aztex. The only meeting between the two sides ended in 2-1 victory for the Aztex on May 16th at House Park.

Consistent Effort The Aztex have scored at least two goals in every game this season and have put away three goals in their last two matches.

Standing Strong Nine Aztex players have appeared in every match this season. Only four Baltimore players have seen action in every game thus far.

Getting Physical The Austin Aztex lead the league in fouls committed with 111 fouls. Yet, the Aztex are not even in the top three in the league when it comes to bookings.

Spreading the Wealth Austin has had seven different players account for 16 goals thus far. Eddie Johnson leads the way with six tallies. Behind him lies Jamie Watson at four and Leonard Griffin with two. Yordanny Alvarez, Yohance Marshall, Lawrence Olum, and Lance Watson each have a goal a piece to their credit.

Injury Update The Aztex will be without Sullivan Silva (knee) and Kieron Bernard (hamstring) when they take on Miami FC. Bernard hurt his hamstring on the road against AC St. Louis and has not played since. Both players hope to return in time for the Aztex next home match against the Puerto Rico Islanders.

Homestead After this match with Crystal Palace Baltimore, the Aztex will be playing at home for the majority of June. The lone road game for the Aztex in the month of June consists of a June 26 road trip to Fort Lauderdale to take on Miami FC.

What's Next? Following the Crystal Palace Baltimore match the Aztex will fly back to Austin and begin preparations for their next home game at House Park on June 5 against the Puerto Rico Islanders. This match the Aztex will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Night presented by State Farm Insurance. During the match a raffle will be held for a full Aztex uniform as well as a ball signed by the Aztex players given by State Farm Insurance.
