AZ United Goal Streak Snapped in 1-0 Loss
August 28, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Phoenix Rising FC News Release
Peoria, AZ- Arizona United Soccer Club was shutout for the first time since May 7 in a 1-0 loss to Real Monarchs SLC. The club had scored a goal in 17 straight matches heading into the game.
"Just simple, bad defending," said Arizona United head coach Frank Yallop. "We weren't ready from the front to the back. ... I just felt the first half we were really passive. You know,(we) weren't in the game at all. ... But you know I gotta say the guys at least they kept going towards the end. We could have got a draw out of it. Just a disappointing result and performance."
The Monarchs' lone goal came in the 24th minute. Defender Alec Sundly slotted a pass to midfielder Maikon Orellana, down the right flank. Orellana got in behind the defense, then beat goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski one-on-one for the game-winning goal.
"Obviously in the moment the guy slipped in behind the defense and finished it nicely," said defender Peter Ramage. "So we'll be disappointed by that. Disappointed in our press and our passing of the ball. Second half we came out good. We had a good go at it. We just couldn't get that one chance to equalize and get us back in the game.
Arizona United SC falls to 8-11-6 with 30 points on the season. They sit four points back of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Real Monarchs improve to 9-11-5 with 32 points, two points out of a playoff spot. Arizona United returns to Peoria Sports Complex to take on Los Angeles Galaxy II on Wednesday, August 31, at 7:30 P.M.
"After a loss like this, it's good to have a game so close after to right the wrongs that we've done tonight," Ramage said. "We'll try to right them on Wednesday night against LA Galaxy II. We'll rest up and recover our bodies properly. We'll come out fighting on Wednesday night."
