Minnesota Axemen News Release
Bemidji, MN - The Bemidji Axemen have signed wide receiver Darnell Williams and quarterback Joshua Aakre to contracts for the upcoming Indoor Football League season.
"We are happy to welcome Darnell and Joshua to our football team," Axemen head coach Robert Fuller stated. "They are quality young men and we feel they fit in well the culture we want to build here in Bemidji."
Williams played a stellar college at Louisiana College, an NCAA Division III school in central Louisiana. Through two years, Williams recorded 119 receptions for 2,271 yard and 24 touchdowns while earning All-American accolades both seasons. He earned Kick Returner of the Year in 2010 while being named to the All-Louisiana Team. After college, Williams signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagle.
"Darnell is very talented and there's a reason the Philadelphia Eagles brought him in," Fuller reflected. "He does many things well and the scary part is he's only going to get better. He makes those really tough catches look pretty routine and he has a great work ethic. We're excited to have him."
Aakre becomes an Axeman after attending open tryouts two weeks ago. Aakre attended college at Bethel University in St. Paul and had a storied four year career for the Royals. Aakre completed 367 of 668 passes (54.94 completion percentage) good for 4,762 yards and 43 touchdowns, throughout 41 career starts for Bethel. He lead the Royals to two NCAA Division III National Semi-Final appearances.
"Joshua is the second player we've signed from our workout in St. Paul and we were really impressed with the job he did over the two days. He is a proven winner and had a great career at Bethel University," said Fuller. "he has that element of sandlot football to him which I think is crucial in the indoor game where he can adjust on the fly, anticipate wide receiver's adjustments and he can throw people open, not a lot of quarterbacks do that.
