Aviators Walk off on CornBelters

Lafayette, IN - The Lafayette Aviators walked off against the Normal CornBelters to get a much needed win in late June.

The CornBelters got out to a hot start, when Ty Roseberry (Nebraska) hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to put the Aviators down early once again. The Aviators would respond in the bottom of the first though, when Braedon Blackford (Illinois State) drove in Keolu Ramos (Arizona State) with a single. The Aviators then had a monsters second inning, scoring four runs! Keolu Ramos, Zach Heeke (Central Michigan) and Blake Schmitt (Purdue) all drove in runs, along with Ramos and Heeke both scoring later on wild pitches. In total, the Aviators scored five runs in the bottom on the second to give them a two run lead, by a score of five to three. Aviators' starting pitcher, Chase Phelps (Purdue Fort Wayne) had a rough first inning, but then settled in and recorded eleven straight outs on his way to five and two-thrids innings of work with six strikeouts.

The Aviators would expand their lead In the bottom of the fifth, when Lafayette Native Kollyn All (Butler) drove in big man Chris Monroe to double the CornBelters score, Six to three. (Illinois-Springfield) The CornBelters made things interesting, cutting the lead to one on a two-run home run by Jack Butler (Illinois State) on Chase Phelps 85thand final pitch. Tyler Kissinger (Purdue Fort Wayne) came in for Phelps, as the fellow Mastodon continued the fine pitching for the Aviators, with one and one-third inning of work. The Aviator bats' weren't done, with Matt Mackey (Eastern Illinois) scoring Chris Monroe to add an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh. The CornBelters weren't done though, when they tied up the game off a two-run double from Billy Mote (Heartland CC) with two out in the top of the eighth inning. It didn't take long for the Aviators to respond, Keolu Ramos continued his hot play for a huge RBI single that gave the Aviators the lead. The Hawaiian has caught fire as of late, with eleven RBIs in his last three games. The CornBelters were persistant and tied up the game again, but Matt Mackey, who has struggled at points this season, seems to have turned a page as he crushed a solo home run to win the game for the Aviators!

The Aviators head to Danville tomorrow, before facing off against Normal again on Thirsty Thursday!
