Aviators Training Camp: Day 1
October 22, 2011 - Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL)
Brooklyn Aviators News Release
BROOKLYN, New York - The Brooklyn Aviators, proud second year member of the Federal Hockey League, had a double ice session on Friday to open up their 2011-12 training camp.
"I'm expecting a high tempo camp, plain and simple," said returning Aviators head coach and team president, Rob Miller - who won the 2010-11 FHL Coach of the Year award.
Returning players from last year's squad, along with plenty of newcomers, walked into the A's home arena, the Aviator Sports and Events Center, early Friday morning eager to get back on the ice.
The first skate consisted of many skilled drills, including odd-man rushes, one-on-one battles, and tons of shots on returning goaltender Pete Dundovich and first year Aviator netminder, Tommy Lee.
"My legs felt a bit heavy after the long road trip yesterday, but coach held a high-quality practice, starting off light and then picking it up throughout the day," said forward and former York (Toronto) University product, Chris Jones. "It feels like I've worked the kinks out after a good first skate."
After the lunch break, Brooklyn broke into two teams for their first inter-squad scrimmage of the year. Miller had the game split into two halves to take a look at some lines and potential pairings. Players began to connect with one another, including Jones and his line mates, who made their presence felt early on in the contest.
"Things were clicking, and I felt good with [Chris] Ferazzoli and [Jordan] Bernier," said Jones. "It's the first day, who knows what will happen, but if things keep going the way they are, it'll be great to skate with them."
Dundovich, who returns after going 6-4 with a .906 save percentage last season, felt that the scrimmage went as usual after he and Lee saw a large amount of shots on the first day.
"I thought everyone played well, first days are a bit tough and pretty wide open so we all have to get the jitters out early," Dundovich said. "For me, it's about getting my foot work and timing back. Hitting the ice today with the guys was something I was looking forward to all summer."
The first day of camp concluded with a team dinner for all the staff and players, as everyone was getting ready for day two.
The Aviators home opener is on October 29, at 7:05 p.m., when the 2010-11 FHL Regular Season Champions take on the expansion New Jersey Outlaws. Don't miss any of the action this season, as great tickets are still available. Log on to www.brooklynaviators.com or call 718-758-7580 today!
