DuPage, IL - The Lafayette Aviators (17-13) fell to the DuPage Pistol Shrimp (16-13) on Wednesday in Illinois. The Aviators took an early lead in the top of the third inning. Miles Simington (Purdue) grounded a ball to the right side of the infield to score Zach Schwartzenberger (Toledo) who had reached base on a walk. Lafayette caught a grove in the fifth inning and opened the frame with a Zach Heeke (Central Michigan) walk and a Zach Schwartzenberger single. With one out and two men on, Miles Simington drew a walk and then Blake Schmitt (Purdue) was plunked by a pitch to force in Heeke from third. The Aviators top RBI man Chris "Diesel" Monroe walked up with the bases loaded and delivered once again. The junior ripped a single that scored two runs and tied the game at 4-4. After the Monroe single, Matt Mackey (Eastern Illinois) roped a double that brought in Schmitt to give Lafayette a 5-4 lead. With two outs and runners on second and third, Alex Dorethy (Western Illinois) grounded a ball through the DuPage infield to plate Monroe and Mackey to push the Aviator lead to 7-4.

After getting two runs back in the fifth inning, DuPage retook the lead in the eighth inning with two singles, a double, a wild pitch, and an Aviators error. After the eighth, the Pistol Shrimp held a 11-7 lead.

The Aviators take on the Pistol Shrimp again on Thursday to finish out the two-game series under some 4th of July fireworks.
