Aviators Stage Rally, but Fall

July 17, 2019 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Lafayette Aviators News Release

Springfield, OH - The Lafayette Aviators lost to the Champion City Kings by a score of nine to ten, in a dramatic game, where an Aviators' comeback fell just short.

The Aviators struck first in the top of the first with a three-run home run from catcher Matt Phipps. (Western Kentucky) It was Phipps' first home run of the year, giving the Aviators a fast start, which has been an area of concern so far this season. The lead didn't last long, with the Kings scoring nine unanswered runs, including five in the first inning. It was a rough start for Aviators' starter Chase Phelps (Purdue-Fort Wayne) who only lasted one and two-thirds innings, giving up three earned runs. Phelps would be relieved by Jason DeCicco ,(Eastern Illinois) whi has been solid for the Aviators since moving to the bullpen. Decicco had another solid relief outing, allowing three earned runs in three and one-third innings pitched. The Aviators got back on the scoreboard in the fifth, with another long ball provided by Prospect League All-Star Trey Sweeney .(Eastern Illinois. Sweeney wasn't done though, in the top of the seventh he provided more run support with a two-RBI double. He was followed by Kollyn All (Butler) and Braedon Blackford (Illinois State) who both also got in on the run party in the seventh, with the Aviators ultimately tying the game on Blackford's Sac-fly. The Kings were able to maintain their composure, holding the Aviators scoreless for two innings, before loading the bases and winning the game on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth.

The Aviators continue their road stand tomorrow, facing off against Champion City again, in their second out of fourth straight games against the Kings.
