Lafayette Aviators News Release
The Lafayette Aviators lost their first and also the last game of the season against the Quincy Gems. The Aviators came into this game red hot, winning their previous five games.
The Gems struck in the top of the first inning with Sean Klein (Garden City CC) scoring on a ground ball. Then later in the inning, Kal Youngquist (Kirkwood CC) hit a two-run home run to give the Gems an early three run lead. The Gems weren't done hitting long balls though, Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli (McCook CC) and Drew Behling (Rock Valley College) both had no-doubt home runs in the third.
The Aviators started to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the inning, opening their scoring with a sac-fly from Trey Sweeney (Eastern Illinois) and a RBI single from Brent Todys (Ohio State) to cut the Gems lead to four. The Aviators were quick to get on the scoreboard again when Matt Phipps (Western Kentucky) drove in Andrew Eng (Binghamton) with a single in the bottom of the 4th. Phipps later scored on a bloop single by Tyler Powers. (Purdue) Powers would also score later in the inning on a groundout by Chris Monroe. By the end of the fourth, the Aviators had made it a one run game trailing five to six.
The Gems then once again took a commanding lead after a big sixth inning, where they scored three runs, after scoring one the previous inning. Sean Klein, Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli and Ryan Ignoffo (Eastern Illinois) all had RBIs for the Gems to expand their lead to five by the middle of the sixth. The Gems weren't done scoring as Kyle Crowl (University of Central Oklahoma) hit a three-run home run to put the Gems up eight. The Gems would add one to put the game even further out of reach. The Aviators were shut out the final five innings, eventually falling by a score of sixteen to five.
The Aviators are back on the road tomorrow against the DuPage Pistol Shrimp before coming home to play a four game series against DuPage.
